Weekly Photo Challenge: On The Move

This week’s photo challenge sums up the bustling streets of Toronto extremely well. Here, I tried to capture both the non-stop action of the city, through the blurred street car in the foreground, while also capturing time standing still, through the turn-of-the-century theatre in the background.

This was probably my first attempt at capturing motion, hand held, with a slow shutter.

  1. WHAT a photo! I used to love taking the streetcars everywhere πŸ™‚ there’s just something about the way they move that’s very soothing. And also, they go places where buses don’t go (and vice versa). Loving this one, three thumbs up!

    1. Thank you so so much. I have exactly the same feeling about street car rides. The city is now parading the new street car along Queen during the lunch rush. It almost looks out of place because of it’s sleek design and silent motion. These new ones will totally transform the look of the city, but not for the better in my opinion.

      1. Ooh I can’t wait to see them! I’m looking to come for a visit in September. Will definitely take a ride to see whether it’s a charmless improvement or not! πŸ˜‰

      2. Good timing for your visit because they’ll be rolling out for customer use in August. Will you be timing your visit with the film festival?

Too bad I won’t be in town then. It would have been nice to meet.

      3. Ah I totally forgot about the film festival! No, I was gonna time it with a cheap flight ha ha ha

Nothing’s finalised yet so I probably shouldn’t be getting too happy yet! πŸ™‚ but yes it would be nice to meet up. Well, you never know, plans change all the time πŸ™‚

  2. Wow Shane. Perfection. It just screams movement and yet I want to stay with the photograph, study it a bit, there is so much detail and I love the color hues.

    1. Thanks Carrie, I almost posted it in black and white, but decided at the last minute to stay with the colour image. I like how it turned out as well.

Nice piece this morning by Gin, and glad to see that she mentioned you πŸ™‚

      1. Oh I am glad you posted it in color too. I am sure the black and white is great too but, the red trolley is stunning.
Yes! I saw that too. She is so lovely. I swear I get goosebumps every time I get a correspondence from her. She is FULL of wisdom and incredible encouragement. I am so thankful for her. To see me mentioned on her blog was a trip this morning πŸ™‚

  3. For as long as I can remember the Toronto street cars have been sarcastically dubbed
“The Red Rocket”. Well…there you have it.
You might want to share this image with the TTC.
    Great shot son.

  4. A wonderful movement shot Shane, I really like how you’ve done it! That theatre looks really great, and I love the colors! πŸ™‚
