Welcome to Ottawa, Canada’s Capital!

Well folks, I’ve been in Ottawa for nearly two weeks. The move was a lot of work, but we are well settled into our new home, however I have been so busy getting us settled that I haven’t had a chance to do any street shooting.

Now that we are comfortably settled and are more used to our new daily routines, I’ll start moving around the city to share what I find. I can’t tell you how excited I am about exploring this new landscape.

As this is my inaugural Ottawa post, I thought I’d share an unusual and fascinating piece of art that is well known around these part. Guarding the plaza of the National Gallery of Canada is a 9.25m tall bronze spider named Maman, designed by renowned artist Louise Bourgeois.

It is an impressive piece of work that towers over you, and if you look between it’s legs on the right, you can see the 302ft Peace Tower peaking above the trees in the distance.

  1. Love Canada, hate spiders 😉 Cant wait for more photos of Ottawa. I lived in Canada for two years but never went to Ottawa so will be interested to see what I missed.

      1. I lived in Vancouver for two years in 1990-1992! We travelled across the country for a few weeks in winter which was wonderful. Lovely country.. I did try to stay but was unsuccessful!

  2. That photo scared the crap out of me until I realised it wasn’t actually a spider… at first glance though… haha glad to hear the move went well!

    1. Absolutely insane that we posted the same image so close together. I take it that you visited in the fall? I just assumed because of the orange tree to the right of the spider.

      too funny!

  3. Well you’re closer to the Quebec border. 🙂 As you may know Ottawa has an active cycling community. The non-competitive cycling group has some great people (I assume you don’t compete. We would have heard it by now or seen it by now in your blog.)

    1. Oh Jean, I’ve been enjoying the cycling around Ottawa so much. No, I don’t compete… I’m a marathon runner… but I have been cycling the boys all over the place. Actually, my new neighbourhood has a very active cycling community, so we’ve lucked out here.

  4. Okay, spiders just creep me out – especially very LARGE spiders! On the other hand, one of my favorite movies is called “Them” – cult classic from the 1950s about irradiated mutant giant ants (go figure…). Regardless of the creepiness of the image, you know I’m a fan of any and all of your photos, Shane 🙂 Looking forward to non-spider images from Ottawa 😉

    1. Ha, I’ve never heard of “Them” before. Not sure I’ll look it up though 🙂 This should be the last spider post… at least for now.

Thanks for yet another lovely comment. Always nice chatting with you 🙂
